IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
‘ Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!

In this brief article, I’ll highlight the key points from the Spiritual Growth Monthly Mind-Body Practice Series on the Power of Your Breath. More details are available in the Weekly Messages on the SGM site.

— — —

Unless you have an illness or impairment that affects your breathing, you most likely take breathing for granted. You probably give it little thought. Breathing is a function of the autonomic nervous system. In other words, your body takes care of breathing for you, without you having to pay attention. If breathing happens on its own, what’s the big deal about it? Wouldn’t you be better served focusing on more pressing needs, on issues that really demand your attention?

Why is attention to breathing important? Why do some consider it the key to health as well as the doorway to the sacred and the path to spiritual growth? In this article, we’ll touch on the answer to those questions and reveal 5 Keys to Unlock the Power of Breath in your life.

First and foremost, breathing is the basis of your physical life here in this world. Your official entry into this life is your first breath out of the womb and your exit is signaled by your last breath. Breathing serves the obvious function of bringing oxygen into your body and releasing carbon dioxide. Yet breathing serves several other important functions.

Breathing regulates the synergy between the two sides of your autonomic nervous system, your sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, or your action and recovery modes, respectively. When you inhale your sympathetic nervous system is activated, when you exhale your parasympathetic nervous system is activated. Having a balance between these two aspects of your autonomic nervous system is crucial to physiological balance and health.

In addition to the nervous system effects of correct breathing, there is a wealth of other positive effects of breathing well. The first, of course, is that when you breathe fully you receive maximal oxygen with minimum energy output. You more fully inflate the lungs and extract the most oxygen and energy from each breath.

The muscular action of breathing fully also massages the internal organs and enhances digestion and assimilation of nutrients. The action of breathing regulates your heart rate and blood pressure and communicates this information throughout your system as a whole. For these and other reasons, breathing is at the basis of your physical life and how you breathe governs the effectiveness of most every physiological function.

When your breathing is restricted or less-than-optimal it affects your health and well-being in profound ways. According to Stephen Elliot in The New Science of Breath p. 7, poor breathing habits contributes to any of the following: “elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, headache, temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), general muscle tension, pain, anxiety, worry, digestive problems, incessant mental chatter, attention deficiency (inability to concentrate), a lack of energy, and sleeping problems.”

If breathing is so important and your body does it for you automatically, what has gone wrong here? Where has your body gone off track? Why isn’t it doing its job of breathing fully and correctly?

The simple answer is that you have given your body too much to do and it is doing its best to keep up with your demands. When your system is overloaded and stressed, this affects the way that you breathe. When you can guide your breath back to an optimal breathing pattern, you reverse the effects of stress and tap into the deeper powers of your breath. So here are…

The 4 Keys To Optimal Breathing

1. Nostril Breathe (breathe in and out through your nostrils)

2. Take Complete Breaths (fully inflate your lungs from bottom to top)

3. Allow and Follow, Don’t Try and Force your Breathing

4. Practice Coherent Breathing (follow a rhythm of equal inhalation and exhalation as timed with your heart-rate)

Nostril Breathing purifies and warms the air; Complete Breathing opens up your full lung capacity and extracts the most oxygen and energy from each breath; Allowing and Following keeps you in a state of relaxation and least effort; and Coherent Breathing integrates your breathing with your heart rhythm and brainwaves, so that your system functions as a integrated whole.

Detailed instructions on these four keys can be found on the Spiritual Growth Monthly website: http://www.spiritualgrowthmonthly.com

Once you have mastered these four breathing keys you can put your Complete Coherent Breath to work for you. What can such optimal breathing do for you? In a nutshell, you can use Complete Coherent Breathing to

release tension and stress,

to dissolve pain and negative emotion,

to open up your subtle energy system,

to facilitate healing, and

to tap your spiritual potential.

A fifth key is what enables you to do all these things.

Key #5: Guiding Your Breath: Use your mind to gently lead your breath wherever you focus your attention and with whatever intention you hold.

In Qigong, we say “allow the mind to lead the qi” (life energy). Breath, in this case, is analogous to life energy. The breath contains life energy, and as you imagine leading the breath through your body, you are activating, opening, and developing your subtle energy system. Why is this important? It’s important because your subtle energy system is the basis of your life, it is the blueprint for your health and well-being, and the doorway to your highest spiritual development.

So, with Key #5, you imagine your breath as life energy, and you imagine that you can lead your life energy anywhere that you focus your attention and to whatever purpose or intention that you hold in your mind.

Imagine that your body is a bio-energetic information system. When there is a free flow of information and open lines of communication throughout your body, you are healthy and happy. When the lines of communication are disrupted, blocked, or impeded in any way, you experience inner conflict, negative emotion, or ill health.

Imagine that the bio-information system of your body registers and stores every event in your life experience and its outcome on an energetic and a cellular level. Events that had pleasant outcomes create pleasurable bio-energetic pathways in which energetic information flows freely.

Events that are negative, traumatic, and not integrated or resolved are stored as points of tension in your energetic system. These unresolved negative events impede energy flow until they are cleared or resolved on an energetic level. You will find that you can use the signs of tension, negativity, or illness in your body to recognize poor bio-energetic information flow, to release or resolve those experiences, and to open or clear your energy.

When you imagine your breath as life energy, it sensitizes you to the movement of bio-energetic information in your body and gives you a way to clear your inner energetic space. The more open and clear your inner space becomes, the more clearly you will sense inner guidance as it arises in that space.

This reminds us of the importance of daily practice. It is important to have a daily practice of clearing our inner space so that we establish a baseline of relaxed, clear awareness from which we can live.

You can use your breath as a doorway to access and develop your inner power: your ability to feel what is good and right for you and those around you here and now and your ability to actualize those possibilities without interference.

At Spiritual Growth Monthly we are here to support your daily practice so that you can claim the life you are meant to live. We provide insights, practice tools, and group coaching support to assist you on your unique spiritual path.

To discover the exact details of how to tap the power of breath and the specific practices that you can use to realize your greater potential, we would love to have you join our community of practice.

Welcome everybody. This is Matt Clarkson of The Mind-Body Training Company … welcome. This Sunday is Father’s Day. So a big thank you to all the Dad’s out there!

Today I want to talk about how to develop mature qualities of confidence, courage and a sense of unshakable mental stability … qualities that are often associated with the energy of the mature masculine.

First of all, I want to back up a bit and talk about two concepts that are essential to what I’m going to talk about today and in fact everything we do here at The Mind-Body Training Company. Throughout all our programs and everything we teach you’ll always see two key concepts come up over and over again. We believe they are essential for a life of health, happiness and success.

Key Concept #1: Training or Practice.

So why training? Well, Western culture is all about getting the result. It’s about “push-button” results and get-rich-quick. Nothing wrong with that if it actually produces the results you want without any negative consequences. But more often than not, these things get you nowhere and waste your time. Now it might be a better marketing strategy to say “instant results” but what we’re interested in at The Mind-Body Training Company is what works in the long term. And when you look at ANY successful result in ANY area of life, there’s always been training and practice that led to it.

We believe that effective training is the true path to excellence in any area of your life — in terms of your health, relationships, finances and spiritually. If we want a result in life, whether that is better health, more financial abundance, better relationships, anything at all, we accept that regular training or practice is crucial. It’s not even so much about the individual results we think we want along the way, (the new car or the new lover) it’s about the training, the process, the practice that allows you to continually grow and evolve.

Key Concept #2: A balanced and holistic approach in our training.

The second important concept is that training should be holistic and balanced in nature. We’re not interested in half measures that only partially address the real issues. We know that effective training needs to be complete, balanced and holistic. We need to train the MIND and the BODY we need to train BOTH SIDES of the opposite.

So with this Sunday being Father’s day, I thought it would be good to talk a little about the qualities of the balanced, mature masculine energy. Don’t worry if you’re a woman — this applies to you as well! I’ll explain how in a minute. I recently read a great book called “King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine” by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette. This book has really helped me identify some areas where frankly, I still had some growing up to do. So I thought it would be good to take the time to share these insights with you on Father’s Day.

Moore and Gillette argue that Western society is in a real mess right now because we’ve forgotten what mature masculinity means. We think mature masculinity is abusive or domineering and society has suffered immensely for that. Moore and Gillette say that we’ve got into this situation for two reasons. First of all, unlike primitive cultures, Western culture has no ritualized initiation of boys into manhood. Also, in recent times, women have reclaimed more of their power after much suffering and injustice at the hands of IMMATURE men. Both men and women NEED mature men and we need mature masculine energies to encourage us, nurture our development and help us grow.

So let’s celebrate Father’s day by talking about qualities of the mature masculine.

Get ready because this is deep stuff!

The concepts from “King, Warrior, Magician, Lover” come from the work of Carl Jung and his theory of the archetypal Self. Jung thought that we come hard-wired with what he called “archetypes”. These are core-level programs or pre-dispositions that influence how we develop and grow throughout the various stages of life. Jung thought that we come in with these biological mechanisms that pre-dispose us to grow in certain ways. Of course, we still need the correct external role models and influences to help develop these energies correctly.

So what are the energies of maturity?

As the title of Moore & Gillette’s book suggests, Jung thought that the archetypes of mature masculinity are The King, The Warrior, The Magician and The Lover. Today, most of Jung’s contemporaries agree that these archetypes apply as much to the mature feminine and they do the mature masculine. We tend to develop one of the archetypes of King (or Queen), Warrior, Magician or Lover more fully than the others. This is called a Jungian “temperament”. But more importantly, Jung argued that to be mature, we need to access EACH of the FOUR archetypes correctly and in the balanced proportions. So let’s look at each of the archetypes now.

The Magician

My personal favourite! The Magician is the master of knowledge, both technological and spiritual. For example, over the last few years I’ve been pretty focused on marketing, growing and reaching more people with The Mind-Body Training Company. I’ve spent a lot of time accessing “The Magician” archetype — reading books about human behaviour, working with people to help them change their lives, figuring out how best to develop myself and others.

The Magician archetype is concerned with knowledge, both spiritual and technological. Examples of the Magician would be your local Medicine Man, Merlin in the stories of King Arthur, Don Juan in the famous books by Carlos Castaneda. But in modern times, the magicians are also the scientists and the technologists who make “miracles” happen. The Magician is the knowledge worker — both scientific/technological and spiritual.

The Secret to Understanding Archetypes

Moore & Gillette argue that if ANY the archetypes are not accessed correctly, we see the “Shadow” or dysfunctional version of the archetype manifesting itself. This basically means there is either an unhealthy attachment to this energy type or an aversion to it. On the attachment side of the Magician’s Shadow, we get “the detached manipulator”. This is the person who is more interested in accumulating power for himself rather than what’s best for all.

Unfortunately, our society is awash with the manifestations of the “detached manipulator”. We see this all the time in TV advertising. We also see it a great deal in the self-help community when the focus is on learning “tricks” and “techniques” to manipulate others and get your own way. There’s nothing wrong with learning techniques and understanding what makes people tick, but when it’s all about manipulating people for your own benefit, then the healthy Magician energy has fallen into that shadow aspect.

On the aversion side of The Magician archetypes’ Shadow, we have someone who is afraid of their own power, the person who denies their knowledge and likes to play dumb. This is the person who is afraid to take responsibility or take the lead in an interaction. The Magician energy, like all the archetypes is a force for good in the psyche and in the world when properly accessed.

Stop for a moment now and consider…

How is your Magician archetype? Do you need to develop more qualities of the Magician? If you do, I’d recommend Secrets Of Meditation, Health & Manifestation as a great introduction to meditation, breathing work and the art of manifesting your desires. If you’re already familiar with meditation and manifesting, I would recommend Secrets Of Abundant Energy. The Magician archetype needs to work with the energy of the King (or Queen) in order to balance the psyche.

The King (or Queen)

The King/Queen servers two functions — the blessing of others and maintaining order. The King is wise and loving. He wants to help others grow and mature. The King keeps order throughout the Kingdom (both internally and externally) and protects the Kingdom from de-stabilizing influences. The King needs to work with the Magician, Warrior and Lover energies in the correct balance for there to be order and positive growth.

An unhealthy attachment to the energy of The King happens when we become identified with it — when we believe we “are” the King energy. Then we fallen under the influence of the King’s shadow archetype, “The Tyrant”. The tyrant wants more than anything else to bolster his own position and his own sense of power. An example of The Tyrant would be Darth Vador in Star Wars or King Herod in the story of Jesus. The tyrant may be ruthless in achieving his objectives, but underneath he’s terrified of his own weaknesses (hence Herod tried to kill the baby Jesus who he saw as a threat).

On the aversion side of the King’s Shadow, we have “The Weakling” who perceives himself to be either unable or unwilling to take control of the situation. He’s paranoid, feels a sense of constant fear and is destabilized at the slightest remark. The King energy properly accessed brings stability, order and a sense of caring for self and others.

Stop for a moment and check inside.

How are you accessing your King archetype? Do you need more of that stabilizing, rational, ordered sense of confidence and community? If so, I highly recommend you take a look at Spiritual Growth Monthly.

The SGM community is run by one of the most mature people I know — Kevin Schoeninger. Kevin is our highly experienced instructor with over 25 years teaching experience. He is a certified personal trainer, meditation instructor and holistic fitness expert. He is here to serve you. He LOVES working with members to help you realize your full potential. Your membership allows you to ask him whatever questions you feel are important. You can ask them on the members blog or email Kevin privately. He answers personally to all coaching questions and we have a great community of people who are here for each other.

The Warrior

The Warrior archetype is not abusive or domineering as we might think. Yes, the Warrior is fierce, courageous and determined, but abusive he is not. If the warrior energy becomes abusive, it has actually become one of the shadow aspects of the Warrior — “The Sadist”. The Warrior has had a bad rap in recent years, mainly because people confuse the Warrior with his shadow archetype The Sadist. The Sadist takes pleasure in dominating others and inflicting suffering for his own amusement.

We often see The Sadist in warfare when our soldiers go too far. In the United States and in the UK, we’ve seen in the news that our soldiers have abused Iraqi prisoners and in some cases, tortured and killed them. This is actually quite common in all warfare on all sides. Of course, the Warrior archetype is an important one. Properly accessed, the Warrior is a motivating force for good providing much of the drive needed for success. The Warrior energy fights for just causes, but perverted it can easily become as bad or even worse than the “enemy”.

Throughout our history, women have suffered terrible abuse and injustice inflicted by the shadow aspect of the warrior — The Sadist. What we need more than anything else is not more sadists but more mature men and women who are accessing their Warrior energy correctly for each other’s benefit.

On the aversion side of the Warrior’s shadow we have “The Masochist”. This is the energy of taking pleasure in your OWN pain and suffering. So how do we access the aversion side of the Warrior’s shadow, the Masochist? Well for me, the best way to access the masochist is to dress myself in leather, cover myself in whip cream, and get a hard spanking until I cry like a girl … Just kidding! But have you noticed how we see these archetypes all over the place — in art, in religion, throughout our culture. The fact that these archetypes appear over and over again is strong evidence that these structures run deep within us.

Do you need to develop the positive aspects of The Warrior archetype? If so, I highly recommend Kevin Schoeninger program The Power Of Practice.

The Lover

The Lover feels deeply connected to all things. The Lover is creative and likes to express itself through art and other expressive activities. Here was have the musicians, the painters, the sculptors and the poets. Many people in the spiritual community have a deeply developed Lover archetype, sometimes without developing the others as well. The Shadow of the Lover on the attachment side is obsessed with Love and “can’t get enough”. On the aversion side we have the “impotent lover” who feels overwhelmed by the feminine and rejects the oneness in order to maintain his artificial sense of individuality.

Accessing the Lover correctly is going to make us more in touch, in sync and connected with ourselves and others. If you need to develop more of the Lover energy then I think meditation is a great practice to help with that. If you’re new to meditation, check out Secrets Of Meditation, Health & Manifestation. If you’ve been practicing meditation for a while and want to go deeper into natural meditation practices, then check out Kevin Schoeninger’s program Learn Qigong Meditation.

So there we have it … the four archetypes of maturity according to Carl Jung as well as Moore & Gillette. At this point, you might be asking — how do I apply this in my life to become more balanced and mature for myself and for others?

I recommend you start by asking some basic questions…

1) Which archetypes King, Warrior, Magician & Lover are you accessing correctly?

2) In which of the four quadrants are you accessing the Shadow aspects?

3) Which archetypes are you’re preferred temperaments?

4) Which archetypes do you need to work on developing?

If you go back and look above, you’ll see I gave recommendations and links for programs that will help you access these archetypes correctly. Go back and have a look at that.

And here’s the good news…

Because today is Father’s day, for the next 48 hours I’m going to give you a coupon code that will give you 20% off all our programs.
So today I want to talk about suffering. Suffering is something we all go through in varying degrees.

There are areas of my life where I have suffered “just a tad” And maybe there’s just the “outside-chance” that somebody listening to this may have suffered at some point as well

So what I want to talk about today is the MOTHER of all self help techniques. I’ll explain what that is in a minute.

It’s true, I’ve studied lots of techniques to engineer “quantum shifts” and “accelerated change” in people. I’ve studied NLP and hypnosis with a passion for ten years and had some pretty good results. Not to mention holistic practices like meditation and Qigong. Again … changed my life … changed many people’s lives for the better.

But when the sh-1-t is really hitting the fan, sometimes the finest techniques just don’t cut it. Now it’s time to employ the mother of all techniques - what I’m trade-marking as “The H-Bomb” of Self Help (TM) (c) 2008. It’s called…

Surrender

… or what my hero Bruce Lee called “The Art Of Dying”.

At SGM right now, we’re discussing the work of Eckhart Tolle. I’ve found it truly eye-opening and very enlightening. I recommend you get his book “The New Earth” and also check out the webcasts at Oprah.com. They are excellent.

I believe that tremendous suffering is something to be VERY grateful for when you encounter it. Why? Because if it’s intense enough, it can force you out of identification with your felt self - your ego - who you think and felt yourself to be.

If the suffering weren’t that bad, you could probably go on for YEARS chipping away at your ego with various self-help techniques. Little change here. Little change there! But the fundamental misperception continues - the misperception that you are this “person” with it’s story, it’s past pains and future hopes of salvation.

The overriding cause of suffering remains.

Now I want to be clear that suffering in not REQUIRED in order to dis-identify with form. I’m not suggesting you go out and create extra suffering intentionally so that you can become enlightened.

The challenge with what you don’t want is that there’s usually resistance to what is, which in fact only fuels what you don’t want. So no, I’m not saying suffering is required. I’m saying perhaps it can be helpful. But really what we’re talking about here is full acceptance and surrender to what is.

In that way you can realize who you are no matter what the circumstances of your life.

Now speaking of suffering, I was brought up as a “born again” Christian (which might explain my rather manic zeal for this stuff).

I used to believe “The Church’s” interpretation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ - that if you believe a story about what happened then you would live forever in paradise. I don’t believe that anymore. And especially having read Eckhart Tolle’s “The New Earth”, this has really helped to gel things for me, so I can see what I now believe it was all about.

Jesus was demonstrating to us how we could realize everlasting life right here, right now - by letting go of identification with ANY form that arises and recognizing yourself as the SPACE in which perception happens. Eckhart says that suffering can be your greatest spiritual teacher - the impetus needed to dis-identify with the self you thought you were.

What’s required is total unequivocal, uncompromising surrender to what is, which isn’t always obvious when you’re suffering.

In that surrender Eckhart reminds us that you begin to dis-identify with the suffering itself because yes, you’re aware of the suffering but you’re also aware of the space in which the suffering arises.

By being aware of it, accepting it and refusing to resist it, you’re actually bringing consciousness into it which dissolves it over time. There is tremendous spiritual power in that. But it’s not a power “you” (as an identified someone) can ever have or use.

Such was power of Jesus of Nazareth that his mere presence could heal. Where did that power come from? His willingness to surrender was so great, that even when nailed to a cross, suffering one of the most horrific kinds of torture imaginable, his response was “Not my will Lord but yours be done”.

So, the mother of all self-help techniques is surrender to what is.

Accepting what you don’t want when it arises in your consciousness. What happens, as Eckhart so beautifully describes in his books, is that the act of bringing consciousness into what you don’t want is enough to begin to dissolve the egoic self and the pain-body.

We’ve all had experiences of connection to Source and insight where you realize that you are the Universe. But then what usually happens is that the mind steps in and wants to own the experience again. But just that recognition of ego and the pain-body is transformational in and of itself. Because once it’s recognized, there’s no way you could every go back to that for long.

It’s also true that, like Eckhart says in one of the videos below - the “no” still has a momentum. But what a relief it is to know that you are NOT that no when it arises. You are the space in which the no and everything else happens

So I just want to end with a quote from “The Power Of Now”

“You have had a glimpse of how the timeless can transform your perspective. But an experience is not enough, no matter how beautiful or profound. What is needed and what we are concerned with is a permanent shift in consciousness”

When I heard that I thought, “Yes, that’s it! That’s what we’re endeavoring to do at “Spiritual Growth Monthly”. It’s great to see a community of people feeling like they’re at home and enjoying the interaction.

So if any of this is making sense to you (if it hasn’t I do apologize and you’d like to take the next step, I highly recommend Eckhart’s Tolle’s “The New Earth”.

Check out the webcasts at Oprah.com and join us as well! We’re a community of people committed to practicing this realization into every moment. Yes, we’re here to help so join us!

Well, now the story continues! From today at SGM, and for the rest of the month, we’re discussing the insights and practices of Eckhart Tolle. SGM member Maryleen posted a link to a great video below that I really want you to see.

It’s about how to release resistance in your life. You’ve heard that what you resist persists, right? Well where in your life are you shouting “No!” Is there a way to release “The No” in your life?
